Project Assignment
This shoe box packaging assignment required students to create a shoe packaging dieline and render it. The shoe itself was an assignment in an adjacent industrial design class where we created a pattern for felt shoes.

The Process
I tested the use of different textures and materials as backgrounds to create a tie to the swamp but didn't feel they aligned with the brand vision and story. Applying the news sources not only furthered the brand mission but also created visual contrast between the text-based background and bold vector illustrations.
While I tried to represent the swamp through it's range of creatures initially, the range and detail detracted from the mission, especially when incorporating news articles. I instead chose to emphasize the alligator and pair it with bold, distinctive shapes. I extended the alligator to extend around the box for continuous visual engagement and changed the alligator's expression to be more friendly.
The dieline adapted in shape and size. Originally it was smaller and strictly rectangular as I was experimenting with purely outward aesthetics. I changed to the more complex, realistic dieline seen in the above final files after deciding on the main visual components to consider the unpacking experience in full.
