Project Assignment
This assignment required students to create a poster for a theoretical event honoring a chosen artist. The central idea was to evoke the artist through the design choices rather than using the artists own work.

Saul Bass
I admire Saul Bass for his ability to explore narrative and character in a broad range of designs. From logo design to film title sequences, he is a master of minimalism and showcases that minimal does not mean without depth.
My Process
To go about evoking his work without directly using it, I first researched his previous work, primarily in movie poster and title sequences, to understand his style and technique. I looked for commonalities between typography, colors, imagery style and use, and how he connects his designs to their meanings.
Understanding his process allowed me to apply it to my own design. I used references core to Saul Bass for my key imagery: his glasses, mustache, hands, and a spiral-esque form. After applying his cut-paper style to them, I arranged them on the poster and incorporated the text. My first draft shows that I was conforming the text to the imagery instead of thinking of it as an equal form.
The next part of the assignment was to iterate and create 9 unique designs. While I could capture his style in my imagery, the iterative process allowed me the understanding of how to apply his style.
